A Tribute to One of the Original Harlem Globetrotters Hello Friends, in Washington, DC, March 20, at the 2011 Elite Showcase Basketball Classic announces the game MVP Award, to be presented in the name of former Harlem Globetrotter, Boid Buie, my Uncle. Boid Buie, former Harlem Globetrotter, and TSU Hall of Fame Basketball and Tennis star will be honored at the 2011 Elite Showcase Basketball Classic, March 20, 2011 at the Verizon Center. Boid Buie, who only had one arm, joined the Globetrotters in 1945, and averaged 18 points per game. The Tennessee House of Representatives also honored the game most unique player, with House Resolution No. 96 in the state Legislature. Buie would go on to own his own team, The Harlem Stars in 1960. The tournament is designed to give teams the opportunity to demonstrate the enduring qualities that will lead our youth to be productive citizens and leaders in our community. The 2011 Elite Showcase Basketball Classic is designed to bring exposure to DC, Maryland and Virginia top high school basketball programs. Our event is a summons to all coaches, players, parents and supporters to join in celebration of the one armed basketball pioneer. On this day, we will ask all of you, in your own way, to celebrate his triumph in overcoming adversity and his proprietorship spirit, and join us in support of our youth to demonstrate their passion for learning and their devotion for the community, supported through their growth in sports. When I read your article on Boid Buie, I wonder how I can ever fail at anything, and I hope that is what attendees of the event, and your readrs will walk away with. The Entrepreneurship is key, but to become a pro in a sport like basketball and be great at it, while overcoming his handicap, and prejudice, I can't even imagine. I think the one thing that made this man great, is they all believed in himself, and had a willingness to succeed. This is someone we all need to learn about. Someone our children can look to and aspire to be like. The next time they feel like a failure in business, relationships, or life, think of those less fortunate that have accomplished great things.
